چکیده

We study the magnetic excitations of a square lattice spin-ice recently produced in an artificial form, as an array of nanoscale magnets. Our analysis, based upon the dipolar interaction between the nanomagnetic islands, correctly reproduces the ground-state observed experimentally. In addition, we find magnetic monopole-like excitations effectively interacting by means of the usual Coulombic plus a linear confining potential, the latter being related to a string-like excitation binding the monopoles pairs, what indicates that the fractionalization of magnetic dipoles may not be so easy in two dimensions. These findings contrast this material with the three-dimensional analogue, where such monopoles experience only the Coulombic interaction. We discuss, however, two entropic effects that affect the monopole interactions: firstly, the string configurational entropy may loose the string tension and then, free magnetic monopoles should also be found in lower dimensional spin ices; secondly, in contrast to the string configurational entropy, an entropically driven Coulomb force, which increases with temperature, has the opposite effect of confining the magnetic defects. Comment on Magnetic Monopole Excitations in Spin Ice

It has been proposed recently [3] that excitations in Spin Ice can be of the form of magnetic monopoles that does not obey the Dirac Quantization Condition. It is also well known [5] that the above scenario leads to non-associativity among translation generators. It will be interesting to see how the monopole picture in Spin Ice survives in the light of the latter observation.

Magnetic-charge ordering and phase transitions in monopole-conserved square spin ice

Magnetic-charge ordering and corresponding magnetic/monopole phase transitions in spin ices are the emergent topics of condensed matter physics. In this work, we investigate a series of magnetic-charge (monopole) phase transitions in artificial square spin ice model using the conserved monopole density algorithm. It is revealed that the dynamics of low monopole density lattices is controlled by...

Possible observation of highly itinerant quantum magnetic monopoles in the frustrated pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7

The low-energy elementary excitations in frustrated quantum magnets have fascinated researchers for decades. In frustrated Ising magnets on a pyrochlore lattice possessing macroscopically degenerate spin-ice ground states, the excitations have been discussed in terms of classical magnetic monopoles, which do not contain quantum fluctuations. Here we report unusual behaviours of magneto-thermal ...

Spin ice: magnetic excitations without monopole signatures using muon spin rotation.

Theory predicts the low temperature magnetic excitations in spin ices consist of deconfined magnetic charges, or monopoles. A recent transverse-field (TF) muon spin rotation (μSR) experiment [S. T. Bramwell et al., Nature (London) 461, 956 (2009)] reports results claiming to be consistent with the temperature and magnetic field dependence anticipated for monopole nucleation-the so-called second...

NMR relaxation in spin ice due to diffusing emergent monopoles I

At low temperatures, spin dynamics in ideal spin ice is due mainly to dilute, thermally excited magnetic monopole excitations. I consider how these will affect the dynamics of a nuclear spin (the same theory applies to muon spin resonance if implanted muons do not diffuse). Up to the time scale for nearby monopoles to be rearranged, a stretched-exponential form of the relaxation functions is ex...
